Uko Essien Udom, SAN

Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice

Mr. Uko Udom, SAN is the Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice, Akwa Ibom State. A founding partner of the firm of Udom and Udom (Legal Practitioners).

Background

Born on the 11th of April 1956 he attended Abadina School Ibadan from 1962 to 1966 for his primary school education. He had his secondary school education at the International School Ibadan Oyo State and Holy Family College. Abak Akwa Ibom State where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1972. 

He obtained a Diploma in Company Administration at the College of Technology Calabar in 1977 before proceeding to study law at the Manchester Metropolitan University Manchester England where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law in 1982. He attended the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Bar in July 1983 with the famous Class of ’83. He was posted to Ilorin Kwara State for his National Youth Service Scheme where he served in the Chambers of Oniyangi & Company with Chief Bayo Ojo SAN as Head of Chambers. Upon completion of the National Service year Uko and his brother Essien Essien Udom SAN set up the firm of UDOM AND UDOM (Legal Practitioners) in November 1984. 

He has since been in active and uninterrupted legal practice. Mr. Udom was admitted to the Inner Bar in 2013 to practice as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.Mr. Udom offers extensive pro bono services to indigent members of his community and church in areas of general legal advice small claims litigation matrimonial causes landlord and tenant etc.

Professional Services to Akwa Ibom State

Represented all the Oil Producing Communities in Akwa Ibom State at the hearings of the Irikefe Panel of Inquiry into Discontent in Oil Producing Communities in 1991. This led to the establishment of OMPADEC as a “Marshall” Plan for the development of the Niger Delta Region. 

Worked under the leadership of His Excellency, Obong Victor Attah, in the preparation of the Memorandum of Akwa Ibom State to the National Constitutional Conference in 1994/95. 

Worked as part of the legal team led by the Late Chief Ekong Bassey, SAN, defending Akwa Ibom State in the Federal Government ONSHORE/OFFSHORE DICHOTOMY Lawsuit at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. 

Worked as Resource Person to provide legal resources and research material to facilitate the work of the Late Chief Philip Effiong (Akangkang Ibiono) in the Committee to fashion out political solutions to the ONSHORE/OFFSHORE DICHOTOMY question. 

Worked as Resource Person to provide legal resources and research material for the Delegates of the Niger Delta States during the National Conference of 2014. 

Founding member and currently General Secretary of the Concerned Akwa Ibom Professionals in Lagos 

Mr. Uko is married to Eme Udom and they have three children, Dara, Didi and Ani. His hobbies include listening to Jazz music, poetry and Christian literature. He is a keen golfer, an occasional tennis player and a life supporter of Arsenal Football Club and Akwa United Football Club.
