Background
Idongesit is of noble parentage. Initially from Ikot Udo in Uruan Local Government Area by birth but now from Ikot Ekpuk in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State by virtue of her marriage.
Education/Training
The young and beautiful Idongesit Etiebet was introduced to education at a very tender age by her noble parents who were both distinguished teachers. She had her primary education at Primary School, Ete, in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area and her Secondary Education at Nsit Peoples Grammar School in Afaha Offiong, Nsit Ibom LGA.
In her quest for learning and teaching, Mrs. Idongesit Iboro Etiebet proceeded to the University of Calabar for her Bachelor of Arts(Honours) in Education/English.
Her insatiable penchant for more knowledge and interest in academic research propelled Mrs Etiebet to move to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology where she bagged a Master of Business Administration in Banking and Finance.
Taking cognizance of the truism that an educated mind is one of the most valuable resources to have in life, Idongesit Etiebet enrolled in several strategic Public Relations, Management and Leadership courses within and outside the country.
Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet qualified from:
- London Business School, United Kingdom, in key interest area of Decision making strategies for leaders
- Harvard Business School, Massachusetts, United States of America in the Specialty of Strategic Leadership and Professional Programming
- Emory University, Atlanta, USA (Goizuta Business School) - Executive Programme with interest area of Leading and Inspiring as well as
- Lagos Business School, Nigeria.
Career
Mrs. Etiebet served her Country in the NYSC Scheme at Shell Petroleum in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. After her service year, Shell Petroleum retained her as a contract staff; from shell she moved to West African Glass Company still in Port Harcourt.
Because of her innumerable success stories, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet moved from West African Glass to start 20 years robust banking experience which began at the FBN (Merchant Bankers) Ltd as Assistant Banking Officer in charge of Credit and Marketing (1993-1997).
She subsequently joined the employ of the prestigious Zenith Bank Plc and rose to the rank of Deputy General Manager/ Group Zonal Head.
As the Deputy General Manager/ Group Zonal Head, Group Idongesit was the zonal head of Victoria Island Zone comprising of 10 branches from 2007 – 2010. Her position made her a member of the Bank’s Management Committee. She was responsible for overseeing, effectively managing and coordinating the 10 branches under the zone. It was her responsibility to grow the profitability of the zone in line with the Bank’s Core target including the translation of the vision and mission of the Bank to staff in the zone for profitable implementation.
Indeed, the achievements of Mrs. Etiebet are legion. She occupied other management and operational positions and delivered on them effectively. Some of the positions include:
- Branch Manager, Zenith Bank, Ikoyi, with the task of ensuring profitability and sustainable relationship management of the branch.
- Zenith Bank Plc, Oba Akran Branch – 1999
- Relationship Manager – Saddled with numerous responsibilities and more specifically, the overall management of the branch, liability generation and establishing new relationship with existing high profile customers and prospective customers and prospective customers.
- In 1998 as Assistant Manager, Etiebet was saddled with the responsibility of relationship management at the Corporate Banking Department, Head Office Zenith Bank Plc.
- She was Head of unit four of the Corporate Banking Department; supervising and approval of subordinate functions; she managed some blue chip customers domiciled in Head office, contributed immensely to the growth of the department’s profitability, sourced for deposits from customers, booked high volume Risked Assets for some large corporate customers, and made credit presentations in some of Bank’s Credit Committee meetings
- In 1997, Mrs. Etiebet worked in the Oil & Gas Department of Zenith Bank Plc as Relationship Manager/AM, responsible for marketing of Oil & Gas corporate customers, preparing credit proposals for customers in both the Upstream and downstream oil sector; sourcing for deposits from oil and gas customers, booking high volume Risked Assets for some large corporate customers in the oil and packaging bonds and guarantees for some of the customers in the department both in exploration, drilling and marketing.
- Between 1997 and 1998, she also doubled as Relationship Service Manager at Zenith Bank Plc, Ikoyi Branch, with the responsibility of managing the overall customer relationship and care (involving management of customers both individual and corporate customers).
- Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet was the Chief Executive of SIIE Integrated Services, a highly reputable Oil and Gas Company before she was requested to bring her wealth of experience to help grow and develop her State; Akwa Ibom.
Mrs. Etiebet currently serves as the Commissioner for Education, Akwa Ibom State. She was appointed to that position in 2021 by the immediate-past Governor of Akwa Ibom State; His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel. She served as a Member of the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council till May 29, 2023 before her reappointment as Commissioner for Education by the present Governor; His Excellency, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno.
Achievements
As the Honourable Commissioner for Education, she performed her duties diligently, recorded great feats while performing the following functions:
- Ensuring that policies and programmes of Government were interpreted and implemented effectively.
- Prompt payment of WAEC / NABTEB fees to enable students write exams.
- Renovation, rehabilitation and reconstruction of schools.
- Provision of facilities to schools.
- Award of scholarship to indigent students
- Employment of teachers/adequate manpower and personnel of primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.
- She ensured the accreditation of many courses in the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), College of Education, and Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic.
- Paid special attention to and worked assiduously to advance Government-owned tertiary institutions
- She ensured the smooth functioning of Boards and Agencies of Government under the Ministry of Education
- Etiebet presented the proposals of Heads of Government-owned Tertiary Institutions to the Governor, paid special attention to their needs and worked assiduously with their stakeholders, leading to the current advancement in the very important sector
- Training and retraining of staff across the Ministry of Education
- Ensured the implementation of staff welfare programmes based on available resources
- Facilitated Government takeover of some community schools.
- Supervision and monitoring of schools
- Ensuring staff/teachers were responsive to their duties.
- Ensured the reduction in Teachers absenteeism and loitering students
- Prohibition of use of Public Schools on School days
- Introduction of two days Resumption for Teachers before the official resumption date for students/pupils
- Introduction of Yearly awards to outstanding teachers and distinguished Schools administrators
- She continually served as a teacher of teachers and others that came her way.
However, before Etiebet’s appointment as Honourable Commissioner for Education, she was the Senior Special Assistant on Education Monitoring to the immediate past Governor; His Excellency Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel from 2015-2021.
Her responsibilities included: presenting weekly report to the Governor on attitude of teachers towards pupils/students, checking of Teachers Lesson Notes and ensures they teach efficaciously, while Heads of Schools must live up to their responsibilities.
Etiebet was to monitor the morning devotion sessions in all schools and ensure each school begins the day in the best way with Jesus Christ.
It was also her responsibility to ensure teachers arrive the School compound in time and stay to the end devoid of turning the Staff room to a market place. Etiebet also had the task of checking teachers absenteeism and students loitering. Without any equivocation, she successfully discharged her responsibilities and made gargantuan achievements that culminated to her elevation to the commissioner status.

Obonganwan Etiebet enjoys Teaching, reading, travelling, watching inspirational movies and she believes strongly in giving her best to every endeavour that comes her way.
The God fearing and virtuous Idongesit is married to an intelligent young professional; Engr. Iboro Etiebet and they are blessed with three (3) brilliant children.
