A’Ibom Govt. Honours Former SGF with Valedictory EXCO

The Akwa Ibom State Government, Tuesday, held a special valedictory session of the State Executive Council in honour of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and one time Deputy Governor of the State, Late Obong Ufot Joseph Ekaette, CFR, MNI.

The State Governor Mr. Udom Emmanuel, during the session which held at the State Executive Council Chamber, Government House, Uyo, described the demise of Obong Ufot Ekaette as a great loss to the state and the nation at large and condoled with the deceased family.

Governor Emmanuel described the departed elder statesman as an inspiring icon an great nationalist whose legacies were typical of the virtues of honesty, integrity, competence and diligent service.

In his words, “I want to say that all Akwa Ibom people share in your pain and grief over the passage to eternity of our patriarch Obong Ufot Ekaette. The demise of this beloved elder statesman, an inspiring icon, astute administrator and committed nationalist has understandably cast dark cloud over our nation, much like a sunset.

Obong Ufot Ekaette left lasting legacies that typified the Akwa Ibom virtues of honesty, competence and diligence. He was the epitome of administrative excellence and a paragon of integrity in this country”.

Speaking further on the life and times of Obong Ekaette, the State Chief Executive extolled the sterling qualities of late Obong Ekaette, as a man for all seasons, who added flavour to public administration in Nigeria, stressing that his departure has left a huge gap to be filled.

The Governor recounted that, Late Obong Ufot Joseph Ekaette, aside serving the nation as Secretary to the Government of the Federation(SGF), and Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, had also served as Pioneer Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Director- General of the Directorate for Food, Roads and Rural Infrastructure(DFRRI) Director-General, Ministry of Budget and National Planning, Chairman Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Permanent Secretary in various Federal Ministries as well as Principal Private Secretary to the then Head of State, Yakubu Gowon.

Also paying tribute to the departed patriot, the State Deputy Governor, Mr. Moses Ekpo, MFR, commended the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council for convening the special session to pay tribute to Obong Ufot Ekaette for the numerous contributions he has made to the growth of the State and Nigeria at large.

Mr. Moses Ekpo described the deceased as a man of credibility, who loved his state and his people. He however noted that since death is an event that must come at some point in a man’s life, the state has been left with no option than to thank God for Obong Ekaette’s well spent life and to pray for the repose of his soul.

Similarly, the first indigenous Military Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga, (Rtd.), under whom the late Obong Ekaette served as Deputy, described the deceased elder statesman as a perfect gentleman, who while working together did his work exceedingly well.

Condoling the family, former military Governor Idongesit Nkanga, said death, just like times and seasons change, is a punctuation that marks the transition from life on earth to eternity.

His words: “It is onto everybody to pass this way. Kings die, beggars die. Rich people die and poor people die. The young die and the old die. In fact, there is something very democratic about death. It is the irreducible common denominator to all men. I want to hope that this belief would see you through in the trying days ahead”.

High points of the event were paying of last respect to late Obong Ufot Ekaette and decoration of casket with the national flag, led by the Governor, Deputy and former Governor Idongesit Nkanga on behalf of the government and people of Akwa Ibom State.
